Evan Smeenge Professor Stabler HST 303 01/31/14 From Ideal to Destruction John Gastââ¬â¢s painting titled American Progress perfectly portrays the idea of manifest destiny that engulfed the minds of Americans. Portrayed in the right side of the painting is indubitable western influence with boats, a bridge in the distance, and trains with little or no track in front of them which allows the mind to conclude the newcomers are pushing west. In the middle of the landscape are horses, buggies, and covered wagons, showing a slight increase in modernity compared to what is shown in the far left of the painting, Indians or better known by 18th and 19th century Europeans as savages. Gast also places the portrayal of western influence in the light portion of the piece, and the old primitive way of live portrayed by savages on the dark side of the piece. This is not coincidence, primitive behavior was viewed as improper and it needed enlightenment this is precisely what Gast presents in American Progress. In the bottom left corner an animal shows its teeth, which could be a signal of the dangers to moving west. What is probably noticed first however is the woman in the center of the painting. The angel, the guiding light of Manifest Destiny the one who is bringing the light that you see so prominently in the right side of the painting. Manifest Destiny was thought of as Godââ¬â¢s call to bring western enlightenment to the west. Those who were enlightened and civilizations created by those who were enlightened were viewed as utopian. However, eleven years before Gast painted American Progress was the start of a war that rattled America. Westward expansion and subsequent acquisition of the west was fought over and the utopian ideal Gast portrays was... ...h and the South wanted the territory for themselves. The North wanted to expand its industrial fingers to better their economy, but the South wanted more land for plantations to also better their economy. First, the Wilmot Proviso established popular sovereignty as the new factor that decided what side was going to obtain the land. This angered the South because they were frightened that their voice would be lost, and subsequently slavery would be demolished. However, the North felt anger after Stephen Douglass proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and allowed any white male settler to decide if the new territory would be slave or free. With Southern white men trying to make the territories slave territories, the North were furious and started bleeding Kansas, which arguably was the spark that ignited the Civil War.

The Writing of the Long Song Essay - 957 Words
The writing of the long song ââ¬Å"How can I be proud of my Jamaican roots, when my ancestors had been slavesâ⬠? This question asked by a woman with Jamaican roots followed British novelist Andrea Levy for a long time. She wondered how anyone could be ashamed of his or her legacy and thus the foundation of her book, The Long Song, was laid. However, writing the book was a more difficult task than presumed. Levy considered many things at the preliminary stage of the book as she knew that she didnââ¬â¢t want to write yet another historical novel about slavery. This is the reason why she chose to write the ââ¬Å"behind the scenesâ⬠-essay, The Writing of The Long Song. Herein she elaborates and discusses the process of writing her book and raises importantâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"I was treading where academics cannot go because of the rigour of their disciplineâ⬠(p. 10, l. 260-262). This combination of two such different ways to write allows her to bring back the voices of those who were left out of the historical texts. Levyââ¬â¢s style of writing is very personal, which could be due to the fact that the receivers of the text are people who probably already know and like her writing and therefore want to read the ââ¬Å"behind the scenesâ⬠-part. She keeps a personal point of view throughout the text that for instance consist of a great deal of humour and interjections such as ââ¬Å"Yes, sisters!â⬠(p. 10, l. 231). Instantly, it becomes clear to the receiver that Levy is very aware of her use of these means. She quickly states that she doesnââ¬â¢t want to write yet another story about how horrible slavery is - and as a way of avoiding that, she chose linguistic means that would bring the essay down to an eye level and make it easier for the receivers to relate to her themes. Levy treats multiple themes in her text: Being proud of oneââ¬â¢s ancestry and the beauty of writing fiction. The theme of legacy is the first thing introduced in the text: ââ¬Å"The topic of discussion was the legacy of slavery [â⬠¦] I cannot recall the panelââ¬â¢s response to the womanââ¬â¢s question but, as I sat silently in the audience, I do remember my ownâ⬠(p.7, ll. 2-3, 7-10). College Failure - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 757 Downloads: 10 Date added: 2019/03/18 Category Analytics Essay Level High school Tags: Failure Essay Did you like this example? I was having a hard time with this subject at first. Then I watched Chelsea (my soon to be step daughter) who had recently graduated High School. Chelsea has been having a hard time adjusting to her classes. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "College Failure" essay for you Create order I have been trying to figure this out, because I had planned on her helping me through college. Now, I have been the one helping her through this process. At first, I just thought it was complete laziness keeping her from realizing her potential. Then I realized that a number of different factors have been holding her back. I will attempt to identify the causes for college course failure among students. In the end, I hope the causes for this epidemic will help those who are graduating from high school. Those who are going back to school and educators in general. It is easy to put the blame on laziness. Professors and parents often believe the reason for failing grades is the lack of participation by the student. They could be right in some cases, but more often than not they are wrong. Picture this, a student comes home from school they grab something to eat and then they head to their room. Common sense will tell you that what they should do is start on their homework. The reality is that they start watching youtube or messaging their friends on facebook. I have seen this time and time again in my own house. What if the reason for this is not what it seems? In high school, I have notice vastly different teaching techniques than what I remember. No child left behind is one of those changes. I think the program started out with good intentions, but made it difficult for a student who wants to transition from high school to college. I saw the general expectations of student work in high school significantly decrease from twenty years ago. Now students just show up and they pass them along, hoping they will eventually do better later on. In my opinion, this is not good for a student who wants to go to college. The education system needs to get better at preparing graduates for an easier transition into college. They should have higher expectations of their students work. I have been in college for half of a semester now. I have seen papers that students are writing in some of my classes. Some of the papers I have peer reviewed looks barely eighth grade level. Yet. somehow they have managed to graduate from high school. This may seem harsh, but I am only reporting what Ive seen. The selection of wrong courses may also attribute to this course failure among students. Students seem to pick classes that their friends are in. They also tend to gravitate towards classes that they may deem easy. The fact is that every course in college has its own level of difficulty. I have a beginning art class that is more difficult (in my opinion) than the computer programming class that I am taking. Students do not take this into account when they are selecting classes. This results in the students hardly understanding the syllabus. When it is time to work on assignments they are completely confused and lose confidence in themselves. After this, the student just gives up and fails the course. Some people think a hefty working schedule coupled with full time course schedule may also be the cause of course failure. I will agree with this to some extent. I have a full time forty hour a week job. I need to keep this job to support my family. I also take fifteen credit hours of classes which is a full school schedule. So far, I am handing everything pretty well. I can see though, why a high school graduate may have difficulties adjusting to this type of schedule. During high school if these students had job they may have only been able to work 15 to 20 hours a week. Now that they are out of high school, they want to make more money and live on their own. This is admirable but in most cases not advisable. High school graduates have not had the years of experience juggling work, fun and a homelife to be successful in college. They would probably do better to gradually work up to a full time work schedule, as they get more comfortable with college. Another reason for course failu re among college students is distractions. It is easy to get distracted with friends or phones.
